How it all began…
In 2009, I took my first solo trip through Africa – backpacking, volunteering and overlanding from Nairobi to Cape Town. I fell completely in love with the continent – the people, the wildlife, the scenery. I felt alive like never before.
When I returned home, I couldn’t get Africa out of my mind and returned as often as I could, eventually landing myself a job as a tour guide in Zambia and Malawi in 2012.
One year later… back in the UK, contract over, I was missing Africa terribly.
I started reading travel blogs for some inspiration when I realised that there were very few travel bloggers travelling in and writing about Africa travel, especially backpacking Africa travel. It was all luxury safaris. No wonder people thought Africa was only a ‘once in a lifetime’ or ‘honeymoon’ destination.
But I knew differently. So, I started my own travel blog, Helen in Wonderlust, to share information, dispel myths about the continent, and encourage and help others travel to travel.
My blog became my passion, and in my spare time, I continued to travel and write. Over the next 3 years, my readership grew and people came to me for advice as an Africa travel expert. I received dozens of emails and messages every week from people who wanted to travel Africa, just like I did.
Then in 2016 I decided to run my first tour to Kenya.
I wanted to show people the Kenya I fell in love with so I broached the idea to my Kenyan friends, who run a camp in the Masai Mara, they loved it and so we set the wheels in motion.
I called it the ‘This is Kenya’ tour run by Helen in Wonderlust Tours.
Much to my surprise and delight, the tour sold out and it turned out to be a great success.
In fact, it was so awesome that I decided to do it again the following year. Wanting to do things properly, I’d already set up as a fully-fledged tour company but having a full-time job meant that I was limited in how many tours I could run per year.
But whilst planning the 2017 Kenya tour I was made redundant from my job in experiential marketing and event management. I immediately realised that this was my chance to turn my passion into a full-time business, so that’s what I did.
