Arrive in Johannesburg and relax and get to know your fellow travellers during a welcome meal and a beer or two at a fantastic local restaurant!

Your Rock My South Africa, Swaziland & Mozambique Adventure starts here and you’re going to LOVE it!

*  If you have the time and can arrive earlier, we can organise any other activities you wish to do. Additional accommodation and activities charged separately. There are really cool local weekend markets in Johannesburg.

DAY 2: Johannesburg

Breakfast, Lunch

Soweto township Tour

In the morning, we’ll head over to Nelson Mandela’s former home, the infamous and often misunderstood Soweto township.

We’ll take our tour on our bicycles to see the many different sections of the area, learning about the Soweto uprisings and the resistance against the Apartheid regime.

We’ll stop at a number of different food stalls along the way to grab some local snacks, as well as a local pub known as a ‘shebeen’ where you can taste the local beer and hear stories of African customs and traditions finishing with a traditional South African lunch.

You will get a great insight into Soweto and learn how the communities have evolved over the years to become what you see today.

We’ll be staying in one of the hippest neighbourhoods in the city, so we’ll spend the afternoon strolling the streets, checking out the street art and cool shops in our local area.

In the evening, we’ll have a meal out at another great local restaurant and those who want to can experience the Joburg nightlife, or you chill back at the hostel with some of the other backpackers or get an early night ready for our trip tomorrow!

DAY 3:  Hazyview

Breakfast, Dinner

Gecko Lodge (or similar)

God’s Window

Today we’ll start our journey towards the incredible Kruger National Park.

We’ll take the scenic route, stopping in the historic gold mining village of Pilgrim’s Rest before having lunch in the village of Graskop.

However the highlight of the day is stopping at God’s Window on the Drakensberg escarpment to see one of the most beautiful views in all of South Africa over the Blyde River Canyon.

We’ll spend the night in lovely Hazyview, ready for an early start into Kruger tomorrow.

DAY 4 & 5:  Kruger National Park

2 x Breakfast, 2 x Lunch, 2 x Dinner

Kruger National Park Safari, Sundowner Game Drive, Braai

Today we’ll head into Kruger National Park for 2 full days of safari!

Kruger is one of the best safari destinations on the planet and you’ll have the chance to see many of your favourite safari animals including the ‘Big Five’ – lions, elephants, leopards, rhinos and buffalos.

On one of our evenings we’ll take a sunset sundowner game drive, probably the most beautiful time of day to be in the park.

And on the other evening, we’ll head back to camp for the ultimate South African pastime – the braai (that’s a bbq to you and me) – cooked by me (I’m a good cook, I promise) and our guide, but you can help too, or you can just chill with a beer, it’s totally up to you!

DAY 6:  Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary

Breakfast, Dinner

Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary (or similar)

Leaving Kruger, we’ll road trip over to the Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary, an outdoor lover’s paradise in the Kingdom of Swaziland. The area we are staying in is known as Ezulwini Valley (which means the ‘Valley of Heaven’).

After a busy two days on safari, there will be some free time in the afternoon to relax and enjoy the views or enjoy an afternoon activity before we enjoy a sunset braai in our beautiful wildlife reserve, surrounded by nature.

DAY 7:  Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary

Breakfast, Dinner

Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary (or similar)

Mantenga Cultural Village, Mantenga Waterfall, Lobamba Township Tour, House of Fire

Today we’re going to visit the Mantenga Cultural Village. This will give us an insight into Swazi customs and you will get to enjoy traditional Swazi singing and dancing. You can even join in if you want to!

From here, we’ll visit the Mantenga Waterfall before moving on to Lobamba township and village where we will have the chance to look around and meet the local people who are some of the friendliest I’ve met in all of Africa.

Many of the local men still wear traditional dress and most of the time they’re very happy to have their photo taken wth you and will be curious to find out about where you come from too, so it’s always a wonderful day.

In the evening, we’ll go for a meal at the fabulous House on Fire, Swaziland’s premier entertainment venue which is also incredibly quirky and very photogenic!

DAY 8:  Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary

Breakfast, Dinner

Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary (or similar)

Today is a free day where you will be able to take part in one of the many amazing activities on offer in Swaziland.

Activities include horse riding or mountain biking through the beautiful reserve, going on a village walk, white water rafting, tubing, abseiling, hiking Sibebe Rock, quad biking, guided or self-guided hikes or a ziplining canopy tour through the stunning mountain wilderness of the Malolotja Nature Reserve. If you love adventure, you’ll LOVE Swaziland!

Swaziland is an incredible place, so whatever you choose to do will be a lot of fun (and very pretty) but there are few things more magical than riding a horse or a bike through rolling green hills in the African bush, surrounded by animals like zebra and wildebeest. Weather permitting, you may even be able to do a sunset ride!

DAY 9: Maputo

Breakfast, Dinner

Fish Market

Today, we’ll cross the border and over into fabulous Mozambique and our first stop is the cool, cosmopolitan capital, Maputo.

Time permitting, we’ll arrive in Mozambique in the early afternoon. There should be some free time to relax, shop at the FEIMA Arts & Crafts Market (Maputo has some great shopping) or walk about before we go out for a meal at the local fish market where you may or may not eat the best seafood of your life (I don’t eat prawns, but my friends all agreed they were the best they’d ever had – I will take their word for it).

Then we’ll get an early night as we have an early bus in the morning up to Tofo!

DAY 10:  Tofo

Mozambeat Motel (or similar)

Mozambeat Movie Night

Today is a travel day as we take the public bus to Tofo! This is a bit of an adventure and what I would call ‘proper’ backpacking. Good thing is, we’re all in this together!

But just you wait until we get there! Tofo is one of the most awesome places in Africa (seriously, you will be in love with this place), with a gorgeous beach that stretches for miles and an intoxicating laid-back vibe.

We’re staying at the fabulous Mozambeat Motel, which I know you’ll love! We’ll settle into our new surroundings with a group meal and tonight is also movie night at Mozambeat which usually draws a nice crowd.

DAY 11:  Tofo

Breakfast, Lunch

Mozambeat Motel (or similar)

Dhow Trip, Island Tour

Today we’ll take a trip to an inhabited island off the coast of Tofo.

We’ll board our traditional dhow early in the morning and when we arrive we’ll get to meet the chief and some of the community members from the Bitonga tribe, visit a local school and clinic and enjoy a locally made lunch.

After lunch there will be time for snorkelling and our guide will show us how to climb a palm tree – don’t try this at home folks!

This is a really fun day out and a chance to see a very different way of life.

DAY 12: Tofo

Mozambeat (or similar)

Tofo Tour

We’ll have a chilled day today whilst you get your bearings in beautiful Tofo.

I’ll show you around town, go to a local pub or two, we’ll visit the market where you can do some shopping and I’ll introduce you to my friend who is an excellent tailor, so if anyone wants any clothes made – he’s your guy!

We’ll eat lunch at my favourite little restaurant in the market and those who want to can take a walk or just chill on the beach. Or you can go back to the hotel and hang by the pool – it’s totally up to you!

Alternatively you can book onto one of the activities on offer (see below).

Tonight is also Friday night, which is PARTY night in Tofo, so those who want to can let their hair down and do some shakin’ what your mama gave you! The Mozambeat Motel often holds pool parties and theme nights with DJ’s and bands, so we may be lucky to catch one of those!

DAY 13: Tofo

Breakfast, Dinner

Mozambeat (or similar)

Sunset Cruise

Tofo isn’t the kind of place where you ‘plan’ too much, so today is a free day just to be and see where your time there takes you!

However, there are lots of cool things to do, some of which we’ll need to book a day or two ahead of time! Options include: going on an ocean safari to spot whale sharks and manta rays, scuba diving, deep sea fishing, quad biking, tour the old Portuguese colonial city Inhambane and surfing.

In the evening, we’ll head out on a sunset cruise on the Indian Ocean, the perfect way to end our time in Tofo.

DAY 14:  Maputo

Breakfast, Dinner

Goodbye Dinner

Today we’ll make our way back to Maputo.

We should be there in good time to do any last minute shopping before we head out on the town for our last evening together.

We’ll go for a meal in one of Maputo’s great restaurants and then see if we can catch some live music and maybe go dancing, something the city is known for.

DAY 15:  Departure Day

Today is always a sad day as we say goodbye to our new friends (there’s usually a few tears, I will warn you), but the memories and shared experiences will last a lifetime!

We can arrange the transfer to Maputo International Airport or you can continue your Africa travels from there. If you want to stay in Tofo or continue north in Mozambique from there, you can, just let us know and we can discuss. Alternatively, Intercape buses travel from Maputo to Johannesburg daily. Just leave enough time to get there!

If you need any support with your pre or post-tour Africa travels, please don’t hesitate to contact us. It’s all part of the Rock My Adventure service!
