Itinerary
Day 1: Nairobi, Kenya
Arrive in Nairobi and transfer to your accommodation for the night.
Settle in, unwind, and meet your fellow adventurers over a delicious welcome dinner.
Your Rock My Kenya & Tanzania Adventure starts here. Karibu Kenya!

- Meals: Dinner
- Accommodation: Glamping (Ensuite)
- Activities: None
Day 2: Nairobi, Kenya
We’ll spend our first full day settling into life in Kenya and getting on Nairobi time. In the morning, we’ll go on safari in Nairobi National Park, looking for rhinos, lions and other animals and visit the baby elephants at the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust.
After lunch, we’ll go on a city tour with a group of former street boys. They’ll share their personal stories with us and show you a side of Nairobi that very few tourists get to experience. You will come away with a whole mix of emotions and lots of inspiration.
In the evening, your group leader will organise dinner at a fabulous local restaurant for those who want to join.
- Meals: Breakfast
- Accommodation: Glamping (Ensuite)
- Activities: Nairobi National Park, Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, Nairobi Walking Tour
Day 3: Masai Mara, Kenya
After breakfast, you’ll have the chance to learn about and feed Rothschild giraffes at the Nairobi Giraffe Centre. We’ll then depart from Nairobi and head towards the world-famous Masai Mara National Park.
On the way, we’ll take in the views of the magnificent Great Rift Valley and stop for lunch in the town of Narok, before heading to our homely safari bush camp, run by Helen’s long-time friends, Laura & Moses.
In the evening, we’ll enjoy sundowners overlooking the Masai Mara. After dinner, you will have the option to go out for drinks (and dancing) with our safari guides in one of the bars in the nearby township. You won’t find any other tourists here!
- Meals: Breakfast & Dinner
- Accommodation: Camping (Ensuite Tents & Bedding Provided)
- Activities: Nairobi Giraffe Centre, Great Rift Valley Viewpoint, Nkoilale Night Out
PLEASE NOTE: We are staying at a basic but comfortable bush camp on the outskirts of the Mara for 3 nights – this involves staying in small twin tents with stretcher beds, bedding provided and basic ensuite bathrooms (hot bucket shower, short drop toilet and sink). There are also separate long drop toilets onsite. It’s basic, but quite comfortable and always an awesome and authentic experience.
Day 4: Masai Mara, Kenya
We’ll spend the day with Helen’s Maasai friends, learning about their way of life. The morning starts with a nature walk around the village, followed by a visit to the village itself to explore local traditions and stop by the local school (term time only).
After lunch at a local restaurant, we’ll return to camp for a relaxed afternoon, finishing the day with dinner and s’mores around the campfire, sharing stories from the day.
Hot Air Balloon: Those who wish can enjoy a sunrise hot air balloon ride over the Maasai Mara (approx. $450–$500), followed by a champagne breakfast, before rejoining the group for the rest of the day.

- Accommodation: Camping (Ensuite Tents & Bedding Provided)
- Activities: Day with the Maasai
Day 5: Masai Mara, Kenya
On Day 5 we’ll jump into our safari vehicle and spend a full day on safari, searching for the ‘Big Five’ as well as many other incredible animals. We’ll enjoy a picnic lunch in the wild under the shade of an acacia tree.
In the evening we’ll return to camp to wash off the safari dust and tuck into an amazing BBQ dinner featuring nyama choma and other traditional Kenyan dishes.
Afterwards, we might unwind with a game of cards or simply relax under the stars.
- Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
- Accommodation: Camping (Ensuite Tents & Bedding Provided)
- Activities: Masai Mara Safari, BBQ
PLEASE NOTE: This is a bit of a long, bumpy drive day (approx. 8 – 9 hours), however it’s the quickest way to drive between the Masai Mara and the Serengeti and avoids 2 overnight stays in Nairobi & Arusha to get there. Please be prepared for the drive!
Day 6: Serengeti National Park, Tanzania
After breakfast and a few fond goodbyes to our wonderful hosts, we’ll transit through the Maasai Mara (so you may see more animals) and cross into Tanzania via the Isibania/Sirari border.
From there, we’ll continue to Ikoma, a peaceful area just outside the Serengeti gate. Nestled between the park and local villages, this is the perfect place to unwind before our safari adventure begins. Spend the afternoon relaxing by the pool, soaking up the views of the endless plains, or enjoying a cold drink as the sun dips below the horizon.
You might even spot wildlife wandering near the camp as the sky turns gold and the sounds of the bush come alive.
- Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
- Accommodation: Hotel (Ensuite)
- Activities: None
Day 7: Serengeti National Park, Tanzania
After breakfast, we’ll head into the legendary Serengeti National Park for our next safari, venturing deep into its vast, endless plains.
The Serengeti is one of Africa’s most wildlife-rich ecosystems, so sightings are plentiful. We’ll be on the lookout for lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, giraffes, and countless other species that make this place so extraordinary.
By late afternoon, we’ll arrive at our intimate tented camp, where a warm dinner awaits. As evening settles in, gather in the communal lounge tent to share stories, play a game, or simply relax by the campfire beneath a star-filled sky.
As night falls, drift off to the unmistakable sounds of the African bush – perhaps the distant whoop of hyenas or the low roar of a lion echoing across the plains.
- Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
- Accommodation: Tented Camp (Ensuite)
- Activities: Serengeti Safari
Day 8: Serengeti National Park & Karatu, Tanzania
This morning, we’ll travel through the Serengeti towards the Ngorongoro Crater. After lunch, we’ll descend into the crater for a safari, exploring this extraordinary natural wonder together.
The Ngorongoro Crater is the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera, formed over three million years ago when a volcano – once believed to be taller than Mount Kilimanjaro – collapsed in on itself. Today, it’s one of the most breathtaking landscapes on Earth, home to an incredible concentration of wildlife including lions, elephants and the endangered black rhino.
Later in the afternoon, we’ll continue on to our lodge, where dinner awaits and we’ll share stories from an unforgettable day on safari.
- Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
- Accommodation: Lodge (Ensuite)
- Activities: Ngorongoro Crater Safari
Day 9: Moshi, Tanzania
In the morning, you can take a take a guided walking or cycling tour of nearby Mto wa Mbu, a vibrant market town where you’ll get a fascinating glimpse into everyday Tanzanian life.
The group will then gather to have a delicious local Tanzanian lunch cooked by the local mamas before we drive to Moshi (and try to spot Kilimanjaro on the way), where we’ll freshen up and have a group dinner at the hotel.
If nightlife is your thing, then Moshi is a good place to go out, listen to some Afrobeats and Bongo Flava, and shake what your mama gave you!

After hiking, you will enjoy a local lunch at Mama Agnes’s house and learn how to make coffee in the traditional Chagga way. The coffee-making process is fun and interactive and accompanied by traditional songs and dances.
In the afternoon, you can unwind by the pool, and later, your group leader will arrange dinner at a local restaurant for those who wish to join.
If we’re lucky, Kilimanjaro may make an appearance through the clouds.
- Meals: Breakfast & Lunch
- Accommodation: Hotel (Ensuite)
- Activities: Materuni Waterfall, Coffee Making Experience
Day 11: Bagamoyo, Tanzania
Today is a scenic drive day as we journey south to Bagamoyo, a historic town on Tanzania’s Swahili coast. Along the way, we’ll pass the lush Usambara Mountains, with views of ever-changing landscapes and glimpses of rural life.
By late afternoon, we’ll arrive at our rustic guesthouse, where you can unwind after the journey. Take a refreshing dip in the pool, relax with a drink, or simply soak up the laid-back coastal atmosphere as the day winds down.
Later, we’ll head out together to a local restaurant for dinner, enjoying our first taste of Bagamoyo’s coastal flavours.
- Meals: Breakfast

Day 12: Bagamoyo, Tanzania
Today is a free day to enjoy Bagamoyo at your own pace. This charming town offers a glimpse of the real Tanzania, beyond the usual tourist spots.
You might join a guided historical tour, exploring sites such as the Kaole Ruins, the Old Fort, and the bustling local fish market; wander the streets at your leisure; relax at the spa or by the pool; or visit a local school that’s very close to our hearts – one we actively support – and spend time reading with the children.

- Meals: Breakfast & Dinner
- Accommodation: Hotel (Ensuite)
- Activities: Cultural Performance Music & Dancing
Day 13: Stone Town, Zanzibar
Today is an exciting day as we take a boat across to Zanzibar.
On arrival, we’ll settle into our accommodation before enjoying some free time – perfect for a nap after the journey or a gentle stroll around town to start soaking up the island atmosphere.
In the early evening, we’ll head to one of Stone Town’s best rooftop restaurants for a true Zanzibari experience with great Swahili food and local Taarab music. Pure magic!
- Meals: Breakfast & Dinner
- Accommodation: Hotel (Ensuite)
- Activities: Swahili Dinner with Live Taarab Music (traditional Zanzibari)
Day 14: Stone Town, Zanzibar

The rest of the day is yours to enjoy. You might join a spice tour, take a cooking, batik, or art class, or visit Jozani Forest. Alternatively, relax by the pool, take a beach stroll, wander Stone Town’s atmospheric streets for shopping, or enjoy a spa treatment.

FAQ’s
Are there any visa or entry requirements?
Most people need to get an ETA to visit Kenya – this must be obtained in advance and costs $30.
Most people need a visa to visit Tanzania – this can be obtained prior to travel or at the border. A visa costs $50 for most nationalities and $100 for US citizens.
We will provide all the information you need to apply for these in the pre-departure information we send you upon booking.
Your passport needs to have at least 6 pages free for your stamps/visas and it needs to be valid for at least 6 months from your arrival in each country.
As you are travelling from Kenya into Tanzania, you WILL need a Yellow Fever vaccination (or an exemption certificate from your doctor).
If getting the vaccine, please make sure you have this at least 2 weeks before arrival and you must bring your certificate with you.
How difficult is this trip/what is the physical activity level?
This trip is physically demanding, not so much because of fitness requirements but due to the endurance and robustness needed for African travel.
Expect long, bumpy car rides, early mornings, and hot, dusty days – you’ll need to be ready to handle these challenges!
We’ll also do a hike of easy to medium difficulty to the Materuni waterfall.
This trip is not recommended for anyone with back issues or injuries, as the rough roads on safari and between the Masai Mara, Serengeti, and Ngorongoro Crater can be particularly jarring.
Is there an age limit for this trip?
The minimum age for the trip is 18.
There’s no upper age limit, however, we generally wouldn’t recommend this trip for anyone over the age of 70, given the physically demanding nature of the safaris – think long, bumpy car rides, heat, and early mornings.
But you know your own stamina, so if you are in good health, and are comfortable wth long/bumpy drives and with the backpacker/flashpacker style of travel, plus able to enjoy the company of a diverse age range, then you’re more than welcome to join us!
I get car sick, can I have a front seat in the cars?
As this is a group trip, you will be expected to rotate positions around the car/bus (this is non-negotiable), so we cannot guarantee a seat near the front of the car every day, so please ensure you have adequate travel sickness medication.
Where will we stay?
On this trip, we’ll stay in a mix of accommodations…
- Nairobi: We will stay in a lovely eco camp outside of the city centre. You will stay in ensuite cottages or large ensuite safari tents with comfortable beds.
- Masai Mara: We stay in a bush camp just outside the Masai Mara owned by Helen’s friends Moses and Laura. You will sleep in dome tents with camping stretcher beds (all bedding is provided) and ensuite bathrooms (bucket shower, short drop toilet and sink). There are seperate long drop toilets onsite.
- Lake Victoria/Ikoma: We stay in a comfortable lodge.
- Serengeti: We stay at a lovely camp in the heart of the Serengeti, with spacious tents, comfortable beds and ensuite bathrooms.
- Karatu: We stay in a lovely lodge with comfortable rooms and a pool.
- Moshi: We stay at a hotel just outside of Moshi town centre with cosy, air-conditioned rooms and a pool.
- Stone Town: We stay in a traditional Zanzibari hotel, in the heart of the city, close to the shops, restaurants and beach.
- Paje: We stay in a gorgeous hotel right on the beach, with beautiful air-conditioned rooms, a spa and a pool.
If you are travelling solo you will be paired with a same-sex roommate in a twin room. If you are travelling with a friend or partner, you will share a twin room (or double if requested and available).
Can I have a private room?
All of our rooms are booked in advance as twins and the trip price is based on a twin-share basis.
If you would prefer a private room, please let us know. We may be able to accommodate this request, depending on availability and at an additional cost.
Please note that some of our accommodations have limited room availability, so we may not always be able to offer private rooms.
I want to extend my trip, is that possible?
If you arrive in Nairobi early or want to stay in Zanzibar longer, we can book additional accommodation at the hotel for you – subject to availability and extra cost.
If there is no availability or you want to stay somewhere else, we can suggest other places for you to book. You are also free to book your own accommodation elsewhere.
Which airport should I fly into/out of?
Arrival: You should fly into Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO). We will have a welcome meeting in the bar of the hotel at 6pm, followed by dinner. So we would suggest that your flight lands before 3pm on arrival day.
Departure: You should fly out of Zanzibar’s Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ). You can leave Zanzibar any time on departure day. You can also fly out of Dar es Salaam, however we would recommend staying a night in Dar and flying the next day or booking a late flight to allow you enough time to get back to the mainland via ferry or short flight.
Are airport transfers included?
We don’t include airport transfers, however we can arrange these for you and, where possible, we will try to arrange it so that you can share with another group member who is arriving/departing on the same flight.
Transfers from Nairobi Airport to the hotel usually cost around $20 – $25 per car.
Transfers from the hotel to Zanzibar Airport usually cost around $40 per car.
Uber is also an option in Nairobi and is significantly cheaper at around $8 – $14 per car.
How much spending money will I need?
Putting aside all your pre-trip costs and visas, people tend to spend between $400 – $1,000 (usually only at the higher end if they do the hot air balloon over the Masai Mara which costs $450).
How much you spend will depend greatly on how much you drink, how much you shop and what extra activities you choose to do.
What transport do we use?
On this trip, we’ll have a mix of transport.
For the first day in Nairobi, we’ll travel in 2 x 6-seater safari vans with pop-up roofs.
For the safari portion of the trip (Masai Mara to Moshi), we’ll travel in 2 x 6-seater safari cars with pop-up roofs.
For the journeys from Nairobi to the Masai Mara and Moshi to Bagamoyo, and in Zanzibar, we’ll travel in a 24-seater coaster bus.
From Bagamoyo, weather permitting, we’ll take a traditional dhow boat over to Zanzibar. If the weather is not so good, we’ll drive to Dar es Salaam and take the large catamaran ferry from there.
You may also take tuk tuks and taxis for short distances.
What do I need to bring/pack/wear?
Upon booking, we’ll send out comprehensive pre-departure information which lists everything you need to pack for your trip.
Generally, you don’t need any too ‘specialist’ for this trip! There may be some items that you don’t have that you may need/want to invest in – head torch, binoculars etc, but nothing too extreme.
Can I do laundry on the trip?
Most places we stay (except for the Masai Mara) will have a laundry service for a fee.
Sometimes it’s machine wash, other times hand wash. There usually aren’t any self-service washing machines, but you can wash small items in the hotel sink.
You are best to do laundry at locations where we spend 2 nights – Nairobi, Karatu, Moshi, Stone Town or Paje. This will give the laundry chance to dry.
Will I need adapters for my electronics?
Kenya and Tanzania both use British-style “Type G” plugs. If your devices use a different plug type, you’ll need an adapter.
Kenya operates on 240V, while Tanzania uses 230V. Most modern electronics, like phone chargers and laptops, are dual voltage and can handle this range, so you’ll likely only need a plug adapter.
However, if your appliances aren’t compatible with these voltages, you’ll need a voltage converter.
How can I stay online whilst travelling?
What meals & drinks are included on the trip?
Your trip includes 16 breakfasts, 9 lunches & 9 dinners. These may be a la carte or a set menu, depending on where we are.
All other meals are on your own account.
Drinks and alcohol are generally not included unless otherwise stated.
Water may be included at some hotels, restaurants and with some activities.
What kinds of food will we have?
We’ll have a variety of food on the trip, including local food and more Western style meals. We will eat in restaurants, our hotels, have street food and some packed lunches.
When we are in more remote areas, or after a long day of driving, we will usually eat at the hotels.
The food choices are not always within our control and may be quite limited in some places.
If you are the type of person who gets hangry, or if you like your home comfort food, or if you have specific dietary requirements (ie. vegan, dairy or gluten free etc) please bring snacks with you – just in case.
There is usually the opportunity to pick up snacks during the trip, but if you want something specific, please bring it with you.
Can you accommodate dietary restrictions?
Yes! If you have an allergy or a strong aversion to a certain food, please let us know beforehand so we can advise the chef.
Please note that we cannot accommodate specific diets like keto, paleo, low carb/high protein etc.
Please be aware that what you say on your booking form is what is communicated to the hotels/activity providers.
So if you decided to be a vegetarian/vegan on the week you filled in your booking form – that’s what we communicate and that’s what you will get.
If your food preferences/requirements change between the time you fill in your booking form and the trip – it is YOUR responsibility to let us know.
We always make sure that our suppliers are aware of any dietary requirements and allergies, however we cannot guarantee that there will not be cross-contamination or traces of allergens.
The understanding of food allergies is not as comprehensive in Africa as it is in some parts of the world – so please check before you eat.
If your allergy is severe, you must travel with an epi-pen. If you are worried about this, please feel free to discuss this with us.

Testimonials
“I knew it would be good but it exceeded my expectations.”
“This was my second Rock My Adventure tour. It was the trip of a lifetime with a great mix of culture and nature. I knew it would be good but it exceeded my expectations. The safaris were amazing, we saw so much. We saw so many animals up close, just like watching a wildlife programme in real life. I loved travelling in a group. It’s like travelling with friends. I am always apprehensive about meeting new people but everyone has a common interest and it’s not long before you’re enjoying sharing the holiday experience with them. The tour has a very personal touch and Helen really cares about everyone having their best experience. For me Helen’s knowledge, connections, care, attention and commitment to ensure everyone has a great time is exceptional.”

“Every day after was as impressive as the last.”
“After our first incredible safari day in the Masai Mara, I wondered how the rest of the trip could compare but every day after was as impressive as the last. I’ve wanted to visit Africa for as long as I can remember and all of my expectations were exceeded. We got to experience, city, safari, jungle and beach, spent some time off the beaten track with locals and some time on the beach with other tourists – the perfect balance. The trip was so well organised and Helen made sure everything ran smoothly, while spending time with us and sharing everything she knows of Kenya and Tanzania. It was lovely to experience all of these moments with a group of people that were equally as excited as me, Helen included. Coming home was very difficult, but it’s even harder trying to decide which trip I’ll go on next……””
SINEAD | IRELAND
“Definitely the best holiday I have ever been on.”
“Without a doubt the best tour I’ve ever been on. I loved every, single, bloody minute of this trip. From the minute it started in Nairobi I KNEW I was on the right tour. On meeting Helen and that instant connection of a kindred spirit. I even loved how we turned a long day of travel into a raving karaoke bus and had the best bloody day ever…just by having fun. I loved all the included activities and the optional ones too. I felt the itinerary we had was a good mix of everything, ensuring to see the best of the locations. Met my expectations, smashed passed them and blew right into the stratosphere. I wanted a slightly elevated tour, but without missing that connection to the people and the places, and this tour gave me all of that and more. YOU ROCKED MY ADVENTURE!!!”
