Arrive in Lilongwe, Malawi and transfer to your accommodation for the night.
Settle in, unwind, and meet your fellow adventurers over a delicious welcome dinner.
Your Rock My Zambia & Malawi Adventure starts here!
If you arrive early, you can visit Lilongwe Wildlife Centre, where you’ll learn about the work they do, rescuing and rehabilitating wild animals and releasing as many as possible back into the wild, where they belong.
- Meals: Dinner
- Accommodation: Hotel (Ensuite)
- Activities: None
Day 2: South Luangwa National Park, Zambia
Today we journey from Malawi into Zambia and on to South Luangwa National Park, where we’ll spend the next three nights immersed in one of Africa’s greatest wildlife destinations.
South Luangwa is Africa’s best kept secret and widely regarded as one of the best places on the continent to spot leopards and African wild dogs, thanks to its thriving predator population and expert guiding. With luck on our side, we may encounter these elusive species during our time here.
Our lodge sits right on the banks of the Luangwa River, an area known for frequent wildlife activity. Elephants, hippos and other animals are often seen moving through camp, meaning the safari experience continues even between game drives.
After arrival, we’ll settle into our rooms and unwind before gathering for sundowners overlooking the river – a perfect introduction to the magic of the Luangwa Valley – followed by dinner at camp.
- Meals: Breakfast & Dinner
- Accommodation: Lodge (Ensuite)
- Activities: None
Day 3: South Luangwa National Park, Zambia
This morning we’ll head out on an exciting walking safari in South Luangwa National Park alongside skilled local rangers and guides – one of the experiences the park is most famous for. Exploring the bush on foot offers a completely different perspective of the African wilderness, with the chance to learn about animal tracks, plants, insects, and the smaller details often missed on a game drive.
After the walk, we’ll return to camp for lunch and some time to relax or cool off with a swim during the heat of the day.
Later this afternoon, we’ll head back into South Luangwa for an unforgettable game drive in search of some of Africa’s most iconic wildlife, including elephants, giraffes, zebras, hippos, buffalo, and lions.
With the help of our expert guides, we’ll spend the afternoon exploring the park and hopefully spotting plenty of incredible wildlife before returning to camp in the evening.
- Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
- Accommodation: Lodge (Ensuite)
- Activities: Walking Safari & Game Drive Safari in South Luangwa National Park
Day 4: South Luangwa National Park
This morning we’ll head back into South Luangwa National Park for another early morning game drive, when the wildlife is often at its most active. As the sun rises over the bush, we’ll continue our search for elephants, giraffes, zebras, lions, leopards, and the many other incredible animals that call the park home.
The afternoon is then free for you to enjoy at your own pace.
You may choose to experience warm Zambian hospitality on a village tour with local guides, offering a fascinating insight into daily life, local traditions, and the surrounding community.
For those wanting something more relaxing, there’s the option to visit the Bush Spa for a massage overlooking a hippo-filled lagoon, or take part in an ‘Art Safari’ workshop with the renowned Tribal Textiles, where you can learn the traditional craft of batik making and create your own artwork to take home.
Or simply relax by the river with a G&T in hand and soak up the atmosphere of camp – and if we’re lucky, perhaps even spot elephants wandering through camp, something that seems to happen almost every time we visit.
- Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
- Accommodation: Lodge (Ensuite)
- Activities: Game Drive Safari in South Luangwa National Park
Day 5: Lilongwe, Malawi
We’ll say our goodbyes to South Luangwa National Park and cross the border back into Malawi.
There will be time for shopping at the craft market and local market in the afternoon (Lilongwe is a great place to buy African fabrics, art, and wooden carvings).
In the evening, we will organise a group dinner at one of Lilongwe’s fabulous restaurants. Afterward, you can get a good night’s sleep or sample the nightlife!
- Meals: Breakfast
- Accommodation: Hotel (Ensuite)
- Activities: Lilongwe Market & Craft Market
Day 6: Zomba, Malawi
This morning we leave the city behind and begin our journey south through the ever-changing landscapes of Malawi, passing colourful villages, bustling roadside markets, rolling hills, and daily scenes of local life along the way.
We’ll stop en route in the laid-back town of Zomba for lunch, a wander around the local markets and cafes, and the chance to stretch our legs before heading up towards the beautiful Zomba Plateau, one of Malawi’s most scenic regions.
After checking into our accommodation surrounded by nature and mountain views, there’ll be time to relax in the lodge grounds, soak up the peaceful atmosphere, and watch the sunset over the plateau.
In the evening, we’ll gather for dinner and drinks before settling in for a relaxed night around the fire beneath the stars.
- Meals: Breakfast & Dinner
- Accommodation: Hotel (Ensuite)
- Activities: Zomba Town Tour
Day 7: Zomba, Malawi
Today we’ll spend the day exploring the stunning Zomba Plateau, one of Malawi’s most beautiful and underrated destinations.
We’ll hike through forests and mountain trails to panoramic viewpoints overlooking the plains below and soak up the fresh mountain air and dramatic scenery.
One of the highlights of the day is a hike to William’s Falls, a beautiful waterfall hidden amongst the forested landscape of the plateau. After the exhilarating hike, there’s the chance to cool off with a refreshing dip in the icy water below the falls. If you’re feeling brave, you can even swim or paddle right up to the waterfall itself and embrace the invigorating cold water.
For those wanting even more adventure, mountain biking can also be arranged through the forests and scenic trails of the plateau.
In the evening we’ll enjoy dinner together as a group.
- Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
- Accommodation: Chalets (Ensuite)
- Activities: Zomba Plateau Hike, William’s Falls
Day 8: Liwonde National Park, Malawi
Our next destination is the breathtaking Liwonde National Park. En route, we’ll visit a rural Malawian village.
We’ll have a local lunch here, enjoy traditional dances and drumming, stroll through the village to meet the headman and healer and take part in village life by preparing maize flower and cooking nsima, the staple Malawian dish.
Afterwards, we’ll continue on to Liwonde National Park and our riverside camp on the banks of the Shire River (pronounced “Shiree”). Surrounded by nature and often visited by wildlife, it’s the perfect place to unwind after the journey before gathering together for dinner in the evening.
- Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
- Accommodation: Chalets (Ensuite)
- Activities: Njobvu Village Tour (village walk, local lunch, dancing, drumming & tradtional healer)
Day 9: Liwonde National Park, Malawi
Today we head out to explore the beautiful Liwonde National Park, one of Malawi’s most scenic wildlife destinations, known for its river landscapes, abundant wildlife, and incredible birdlife.
This morning, we’ll enjoy a boat safari along the Shire River, one of the highlights of visiting Liwonde. Drifting quietly along the water offers the chance to get incredibly close to wildlife as animals gather at the riverbanks to drink, cool off, and bathe. Expect plenty of hippos, crocodiles, elephants, and an abundance of birdlife along the way, all set against the stunning scenery of the park.
After the boat safari, we’ll return to the lodge for lunch and some time to relax before heading back out into the park later in the afternoon.
This afternoon’s game drive gives us the chance to explore more of Liwonde’s diverse landscapes in search of elephants, antelope, hippos, crocodiles, and if we’re lucky, predators such as lions, leopards, and cheetahs.
As the sun begins to set, we’ll stop for safari sundowners in the bush – the perfect chance to soak up the atmosphere with a drink in hand while watching the sky turn shades of orange and pink over the African wilderness.
After sunset, we’ll continue our drive before returning to camp for dinner following another unforgettable day on safari.

- Accommodation: Chalets (Ensuite)

In the afternoon we’ll embark on a sunset cruise on the stunning Lake Malawi. Sip on refreshing drinks, take a dip in the crystal-clear waters, and marvel at the sight of magnificent fish eagles soaring gracefully overhead.
- Meals: Breakfast & Dinner

After lunch, we’ll take a boat over to beautiful Mumbo Island in Lake Malawi National Park, for the next 2 nights, staying in beautiful rustic but very comfortable chalets directly overlooking the lake.
We’ll have dinner together in the communal area and afterwards, you can learn to play the traditional Malawian game of bao or sit around the fire for cosy chats, before going to bed and falling asleep listening to the sounds of the waves lapping the rocks. And relax…
- Meals: Breakfast & Dinner

Trip Notes
- This trip is perfect for travellers looking for a balance of safari, culture, adventure, and relaxation without feeling constantly rushed from place to place.
- This is a more relaxed trip compared to some of our faster-paced itineraries, but it’s far from boring. For many travellers who’ve visited both countries, Malawi and Zambia often end up being some of their favourite places in Africa. They also happen to be two of Helen’s personal favourite countries on the continent – and she’s travelled extensively across Africa.
FAQ’s
Are there any visa or entry requirements?
Most travellers will require visas for both Zambia and Malawi.
For Zambia, many nationalities can obtain a visa on arrival or apply online in advance via the official e-visa system. Visa requirements and costs vary depending on nationality.
For Malawi, many nationalities are now required to apply for an e-visa in advance of travel, while some may still be eligible for a visa on arrival. Requirements and fees vary by nationality.
We will provide all the information you need to apply for these in the pre-departure information we send you upon booking.
Your passport needs to have at least 4 pages free for your stamps/visas and it needs to be valid for at least 6 months from your arrival in each country.
How difficult is this trip/what is the physical activity level?
This trip is relatively relaxed compared to many of our more fast-paced adventures and doesn’t require a particularly high level of fitness. However, like all African travel, it does require a sense of adventure, flexibility, and a degree of endurance.
Roads can be long and bumpy, plans can occasionally change, and travel days can sometimes be tiring — but that’s all part of the experience. The reward is an unforgettable journey through some of the most beautiful, wild, and welcoming parts of Zambia and Malawi.
If you’re comfortable with a more adventurous style of travel and happy to embrace the unexpected at times, you’ll find this trip incredibly rewarding.
Is there an age limit for this trip?
The minimum age for the trip is 18.
There’s no upper age limit, however, we generally wouldn’t recommend this trip for anyone over the age of 70, given the physically demanding nature of the safaris – think long, bumpy car rides, heat, and early mornings.
But you know your own stamina, so if you are in good health, and are comfortable wth long/bumpy drives and with the flashpacker style of travel, plus able to enjoy the company of a diverse age range, then you’re more than welcome to join us!
I get car sick, can I have a front seat in the cars?
As this is a group trip, you will be expected to rotate positions around the car/bus (this is non-negotiable), so we cannot guarantee a seat near the front of the car every day, so please ensure you have adequate travel sickness medication.
Where will we stay?
On this trip, we’ll stay in a mix of accommodations from safari camps, lodges and guesthouses. There will be no camping and you will stay in a proper bed with ensuite facilities on all nightss/
If you are travelling solo you will be paired with a same-sex roommate in a twin room. If you are travelling with a friend or partner, you will share a twin room (or double if requested and available).
We may be able to provide single rooms at an extra cost. Please enquire when booking.
Can I have a private room?
All of our rooms are booked in advance as twins and the trip price is based on a twin-share basis.
If you would prefer a private room, please let us know. We may be able to accommodate this request, depending on availability and at an additional cost.
Please note that some of our accommodations have limited room availability, so we may not always be able to offer private rooms.
I want to extend my trip, is that possible?
If you arrive in Lilonge early or want to stay longer at the end of the trip, we can book additional accommodation at the hotel for you – subject to availability and extra cost.
If there is no availability or you want to stay somewhere else, we can suggest other places for you to book. You are also free to book your own accommodation elsewhere.
Which airport should I fly into/out of?
Arrival/Departure: You should fly into Kamuzu International Airport (LLW) in Lilongwe. We will have a welcome meeting in the bar of the hotel at 6pm, followed by dinner. So we would suggest that your flight lands before 3pm on arrival day.
Departure: You should fly out of Kamuzu International Airport (LLW) in Lilongwe.. You can leave Lilongwe any time on departure day.
Are airport transfers included?
We don’t include airport transfers, however we can arrange these for you and, where possible, we will try to arrange it so that you can share with another group member who is arriving/departing on the same flight.
How much spending money will I need?
Putting aside all your pre-trip costs and visas, people tend to spend between $400 – $500.
How much you spend will depend greatly on how much you drink, how much you shop and what extra activities you choose to do.
What transport do we use?
On this trip, we’ll have a mix of safari vehicles, mini buses, and boats.
You may also take tuk tuks and taxis for short distances.
What do I need to bring/pack/wear?
Upon booking, we’ll send out comprehensive pre-departure information which lists everything you need to pack for your trip.
Generally, you don’t need any too ‘specialist’ for this trip! There may be some items that you don’t have that you may need/want to invest in – head torch, binoculars etc, but nothing too extreme.
Can I do laundry on the trip?
Most places we stay will have a laundry service for a fee.
Sometimes it’s machine wash, other times hand wash. There usually aren’t any self-service washing machines, but you can wash small items in the hotel sink.
You are best to do laundry at locations where we spend 2 nights – South Luangwa, Zomba and Liwonde.
Will I need adapters for my electronics?
Zambia and Malawi use British-style “Type G” plugs. If your devices use a different plug type, you’ll need an adapter.
How can I stay online whilst travelling?
What meals & drinks are included on the trip?
Your trip includes 13 breakfasts, 6 lunches & 10 dinners. These may be a la carte or a set menu, depending on where we are.
All other meals are on your own account.
Drinks and alcohol are generally not included unless otherwise stated.
Water may be included at some hotels, restaurants and with some activities.
What kinds of food will we have?
We’ll have a variety of food on the trip, including local food and more Western style meals. We will eat in restaurants, our hotels, have street food and some packed lunches.
When we are in more remote areas, or after a long day of driving, we will usually eat at the hotels.
The food choices are not always within our control and may be quite limited in some places.
If you are the type of person who gets hangry, or if you like your home comfort food, or if you have specific dietary requirements (ie. vegan, dairy or gluten free etc) please bring snacks with you – just in case.
There is usually the opportunity to pick up snacks during the trip, but if you want something specific, please bring it with you.
Can you accommodate dietary restrictions?
Yes! If you have an allergy or a strong aversion to a certain food, please let us know beforehand so we can advise the chef.
Please note that we cannot accommodate specific diets like keto, paleo, low carb/high protein etc.
Please be aware that what you say on your booking form is what is communicated to the hotels/activity providers.
So if you decided to be a vegetarian/vegan on the week you filled in your booking form – that’s what we communicate and that’s what you will get.
If your food preferences/requirements change between the time you fill in your booking form and the trip – it is YOUR responsibility to let us know.
We always make sure that our suppliers are aware of any dietary requirements and allergies, however we cannot guarantee that there will not be cross-contamination or traces of allergens.
The understanding of food allergies is not as comprehensive in Africa as it is in some parts of the world – so please check before you eat.
If your allergy is severe, you must travel with an epi-pen. If you are worried about this, please feel free to discuss this with us.
Is this trip for me?

Testimonials
“Honestly, it was one of the best trips I have ever had.”
“Going on tour with Helen/Rock My Adventure is like going on holiday with your friend, your much more organised friend who knows what they’re doing. It didn’t feel like a tour at all and I liked that it wasn’t too regimented and that there were lots of options of different things to do in places depending on interest, activity levels etc. Honestly, it was one of the best trips I have ever had, including various solo travels, holidays with friends/family, other tours. It really was amazing! I really don’t know what would make the trip better. I’m very glad I chose Rock My Adventure, as I wouldn’t have had the same experience with a big overland tour, this did feel more authentic. Helen, you were a gem! I liked that you weren’t some distant tour leader but more like our friend who could answer all our questions and sort stuff out. You did a great job!“
LAURA | UK
“It’s one of the best trips I’ve ever taken and it will be hard to top.”
“I waited a long time to make my first trip to Africa and now I know why – I needed to see it with Helen and my 7 other new friends/tour mates! Not only did we get to see some of Africa’s most amazing sights (leopards, lion cubs, 1000 elephants, fighting giraffes, Victoria Falls, local villages) but our down time was just as wonderful (dancing in Cape Maclear, winning the pub quiz, chatting around the campfire, drinking all the red wine). It’s one of the best trips I’ve ever taken and it will be hard to top. Helen is the best! Her patience and knowledge know no bounds. She was great at balancing out the different personalities on the trip and making sure everyone was comfortable. Helen, my other tour mates, and the locals made every day fun and interesting. I can’t wait to return to Africa! But how do I decide which Rock My Adventure tour to go on next?”
ANNIE | USA
“It was perfect. I cannot recommend this trip enough.”
“l have always been a solo backpacker but, honestly, Africa intimated me. I am so happy that I discovered Rock My Adventure. It was perfect. It attracts people who go with the flow, are fun, and adventurous. My group became my family. Malawi, Zambia, and Botswana are stunning countries. Vicki was absolutely excellent. She did her very best to make sure everything went smoothly. She stayed up in the evenings to call and confirm bookings/coordinate etc. Most importantly she balanced being a tour leader and being part of the group (enjoying the experiences with us). I cannot recommend this trip enough.”
