Itinerary

Day 1: Welcome to Angola

Welcome to Angola! After arriving at Luanda International Airport, you’ll be met and transferred to our hotel. After some time to relax, we’ll head out for an evening stroll along the Luanda Marginal and Ilha de Luanda, enjoying our first sunset over the Atlantic Ocean.

This evening we’ll come together for a welcome dinner, giving everyone the chance to get to know each other before the trip begins.

Day 2: Discover Angola’s Vibrant Capital

Today we’ll dive into the history, culture and infectious energy of Luanda. We’ll explore the impressive São Miguel Fortress, visit the fascinating National Museum of Anthropology and wander through some of the city’s most interesting neighbourhoods, getting our first real taste of life in Angola.

We’ll also enjoy a community-based experience, spending time with a local social initiative to gain a deeper understanding of everyday life in Luanda, meet local people and learn about the inspiring work being done within the community.

This afternoon, it’s time to immerse ourselves in one of Angola’s greatest passions… dance! We’ll take part in an interactive introduction to Kuduro and Kizomba, two of the country’s most iconic dance styles. Guided by local instructors, we’ll learn the basic steps, discover the stories and traditions behind the dances and, most importantly, have plenty of fun along the way. It’s a brilliant way to experience Angola’s vibrant culture firsthand – and don’t worry, no dance experience is required!

Day 3: Journey into Angola’s Interior

This morning we’ll leave Luanda behind and head inland towards the beautiful province of Malanje. Along the way, we’ll stop to explore the peaceful Ndalatando Botanical Garden, home to a wonderful collection of tropical plants and towering trees, before continuing through Angola’s ever-changing landscapes.

As we travel, you’ll begin to see a completely different side of the country, with lush countryside, rural villages and scenic views giving us a glimpse into life beyond the capital.

We’ll arrive at our beautiful lodge later this afternoon, where we can relax and soak up the peaceful surroundings after our journey. We’ll spend the next two nights here, giving us plenty of time to explore the region and enjoy this tranquil setting.

Day 4: The Mighty Calandula Falls

Today is dedicated to one of Angola’s most spectacular natural wonders – the breathtaking Calandula Falls.

We’ll spend the day exploring the different viewpoints, taking in the sheer scale and power of one of Africa’s largest waterfalls, before descending to the base of the falls for an unforgettable up-close perspective. Feel the spray on your face, listen to the roar of the cascading water and soak up the incredible scenery surrounding this hidden gem.

After an unforgettable day, we’ll return to the lodge to relax and enjoy dinner together.

Day 5: Black Rocks & Rural Angola

After breakfast, we’ll continue our journey south towards Conda, with some incredible stops along the way.

Our first stop is the remarkable Black Rocks of Pungo Andongo, one of Angola’s most iconic natural landmarks. Rising dramatically from the surrounding plains, these enormous granite formations are steeped in local legends and history, making them a fascinating place to explore and photograph.

We’ll then visit the rapids of the Keve River, where the rushing water and peaceful surroundings provide the perfect place to stretch our legs and enjoy the scenery before continuing our journey.

As we travel deeper into Angola, we’ll pass through rolling countryside, rural landscapes and traditional villages, offering a glimpse into everyday life away from the tourist trail. By late afternoon, we’ll arrive at tour lodge, where we’ll settle in and enjoy dinner together in this peaceful setting.

Day 6: Experience Rural Angola

Today offers a slower pace as we experience the beauty of rural Angola and discover life in the Conda region.

We’ll spend the day learning about the local plantations in the area, their agricultural production and the important role they plays within the local community. As we wander, we’ll gain a fascinating insight into rural life and the traditions that have shaped this part of Angola for generations.

We’ll also have the opportunity to spend time with local communities, meeting the people who call this region home and learning more about their daily lives, culture and way of life. These genuine local interactions are often the moments that stay with you long after the trip has ended, offering a deeper connection to Angola than most visitors ever experience.

After a rewarding day, we’ll return to the lodge to relax and enjoy another evening surrounded by the peaceful Angolan countryside.

Day 7: Waterfalls & the Atlantic Coast

This morning we’ll leave the lush landscapes of inland Angola behind and make our way towards the Atlantic coast, with a couple of scenic stops along the way.

Our first stop is the beautiful Binga Waterfalls, where we’ll have time to admire the cascading water and enjoy the peaceful natural surroundings before continuing our journey west.

As we approach the coast, the scenery begins to change dramatically, with rolling countryside giving way to sweeping ocean views. By the afternoon, we’ll arrive in the laid-back beach destination of Cabo Ledo, home to one of Angola’s most beautiful stretches of coastline.

The rest of the afternoon is yours to relax. Whether you fancy a stroll along the golden sands, a refreshing swim in the Atlantic, or simply unwinding with a drink while listening to the sound of the waves, it’s the perfect opportunity to slow down and enjoy Angola’s spectacular coastline.

Day 8: Relax in Cabo Ledo

Today is yours to enjoy at your own pace in the beautiful coastal setting of Cabo Ledo.

Spend the day relaxing on one of Angola’s most spectacular beaches, take a leisurely walk along the golden sands, or cool off with a swim in the Atlantic Ocean. If you’d like to explore a little more, you can visit the nearby fishing village, where you’ll get a glimpse into the daily lives of the local community and watch the colourful fishing boats come and go.

Whether you choose to soak up the sunshine with a good book, enjoy the peaceful surroundings or simply take some time to unwind before the next stage of our adventure, today is all about embracing the slower pace of Angola’s stunning coastline.

Day 9: Safari in Quiçama National Park

Today we’ll head into Quiçama National Park, one of Angola’s most important protected areas, for a day immersed in the country’s incredible wildlife and natural beauty.

Our adventure begins with a land safari, where we’ll explore the park in search of its diverse wildlife while learning about the conservation efforts helping to protect this unique ecosystem. Keep your eyes peeled as we journey through the park’s varied landscapes, from open plains to dense bush, with opportunities to spot a variety of animals and birdlife along the way.

Later, we’ll swap four wheels for the water as we cruise along the Kwanza River by boat. This peaceful stretch of river offers a completely different perspective on the park, with excellent opportunities to spot birds, crocodiles and hippos, while soaking up the tranquillity of one of Angola’s most beautiful natural settings.

After a fantastic day exploring both land and water, we’ll return to Cabo Ledo for our final evening on the coast.

Day 10: South to Namibe

This morning we’ll bid farewell to Angola’s beautiful coastline and return to Luanda, where we’ll catch a domestic flight to the fascinating southern city of Namibe.

After landing, we’ll be welcomed by our local team before transferring to our hotel. The landscapes of southern Angola are dramatically different from those we’ve experienced so far, and over the next few days we’ll venture into one of the country’s most remote and breathtaking regions, where vast deserts, rugged mountains and extraordinary scenery await.

Settle in this evening and get ready for the next chapter of our Angolan adventure.

Day 11: Into the Namib Desert & Africa’s Last Great Wilderness

Our desert expedition begins today as we venture deep into Iona National Park, one of Africa’s last great wildernesses. Travelling through the ancient Namib Desert – one of the oldest and most dramatic deserts on Earth – we’ll discover a landscape unlike anywhere else, where vast open plains, towering rock formations and endless horizons create some of Angola’s most breathtaking scenery.

As we journey through this remote wilderness, we’ll stop at several of the region’s most remarkable natural landmarks, including the striking rock formations of Vale da Pedra Faca, Mupo Embati, Pedra do Soba and Morro dos Fiscais. Each stop reveals a different side of this extraordinary landscape and offers incredible opportunities to take in the sheer scale and beauty of southern Angola.

We’ll also have the chance to see the remarkable Welwitschia mirabilis, one of the world’s most extraordinary plants. Found only in the Namib Desert, these incredible survivors can live for well over a thousand years, making them one of the oldest living plant species on Earth.

Our final stop is the beautiful Vale dos Carneiros before continuing through the ever-changing desert scenery to our accommodation. As darkness falls, we’ll spend the night beneath some of the clearest, darkest skies in Africa – a fitting end to an unforgettable day exploring one of the continent’s last true wildernesses.

• Activities: Iona National Park, Welwitschia mirabilis, Vale dos Carneiros

PLEASE NOTE: We’ll spend three unforgettable nights camping in Iona National Park, right in the heart of one of Africa’s last great wildernesses. Accommodation is in twin-share tents with camp beds, pillows, sleeping bags and all camping equipment provided, so there’s no need to bring any camping gear.

Facilities are simple but comfortable, with portable toilets and bucket showers. But there It’s all part of the adventure, and there’s nothing quite like sitting around the campfire before falling asleep beneath some of the clearest, darkest skies in Africa.

Day 12: Exploring Iona National Park

Today we continue our adventure through the wild landscapes of Iona National Park, entering via Salondjamba as we explore one of the most remote and untouched corners of Angola.

Our route takes us across the Curoca River and through the spectacular Jurassic Valley, a dramatic landscape of rugged mountains, ancient rock formations and vast desert plains that feels almost prehistoric. It’s easy to see how this remarkable valley earned its name.

The rest of the day is dedicated to an unforgettable safari through this extraordinary desert wilderness. Despite its harsh conditions, Iona is home to an impressive variety of desert-adapted wildlife. Keep your eyes peeled for elegant giraffes, majestic oryx, gazelles, hyenas, jackals and many other species that have evolved to thrive in this challenging environment. The park is also a fantastic destination for birdwatchers, with numerous species specially adapted to life in the desert.

With its dramatic scenery, abundant wildlife and incredible sense of isolation, today promises to be one of the true highlights of our Angolan adventure before we return to camp for another unforgettable evening beneath the stars.

Day 13: Valley of Death & Lion Cave

Our desert adventure continues today as we explore even more of the vast and untamed landscapes of Iona National Park, venturing into new areas in search of wildlife and taking in the incredible scenery that makes this one of Africa’s most remarkable wildernesses.

Along the way, we’ll visit the hauntingly beautiful Valley of Death, where the stark desert landscape creates an almost otherworldly atmosphere. We’ll also stop at the famous abandoned Cadillac, a curious landmark that has become an unexpected icon of the Namib Desert, before continuing to the impressive Lion Cave, where dramatic rock formations and sweeping views make for another unforgettable stop.

As we travel through the park, there will be further opportunities to spot the desert-adapted wildlife that calls Iona home, from graceful antelope and oryx to jackals, hyenas and an incredible variety of birdlife.

Tonight, we’ll once again camp beneath the spectacular African night sky. Far from towns and cities, the lack of light pollution creates the perfect setting for an unforgettable evening under a blanket of stars – one of those magical travel moments you’ll remember long after the adventure has ended.

Day 14: Pediva Hot Springs and Return to Lubango

After one last sunrise in the Namib Desert, we’ll leave our campsite behind and begin our journey back through the extraordinary landscapes of southern Angola.

As we retrace our route through this vast wilderness, there will be more opportunities to soak up the incredible desert scenery before stopping at the Pediva Hot Springs. Here, we’ll have time to relax and enjoy the naturally warm waters – a well-earned treat after several days exploring one of Africa’s most remote regions.

From there, we’ll continue to Namibe before travelling onwards to Lubango, a vibrant city nestled high in Angola’s central highlands. The change in scenery is remarkable, as the endless desert landscapes gradually give way to greener mountains and cooler temperatures, offering yet another glimpse of Angola’s incredible diversity.

This evening, we’ll settle into our accommodation in Lubango and enjoy a comfortable night’s rest after an unforgettable desert expedition.

Day 15: Discover Lubango

This morning we’ll discover a little more of Lubango, one of Angola’s most attractive cities, nestled amongst the mountains of the Huíla Highlands.

We’ll begin by visiting one of the region’s traditional communities, where we’ll have the opportunity to learn more about the customs, traditions and way of life of one of Angola’s indigenous tribes. It’s a fascinating insight into the country’s rich cultural heritage and a wonderful opportunity to meet local people before continuing our journey.

Afterwards, we’ll visit the Regional Museum of Huíla, where we’ll learn more about the region’s history, culture and heritage, before exploring some of Lubango’s main historical landmarks.

Later, we’ll transfer to the airport for our domestic flight back to Luanda, where we’ll spend our final evening together, reminiscing about the incredible landscapes, wildlife, culture and adventures that have made this journey through one of Africa’s most fascinating and least-visited countries so special.

Day 16: Goodbye Angola!

Before flying back to Luanda, we’ll visit some of Lubango’s highlights, including the Regional Museum of Huíla, learning more about the history and culture of this beautiful mountain region.

Trip Notes

• This is one of the most off-the-beaten-track adventures I’ve ever put together. Think vast desert landscapes, towering waterfalls, remote national parks, an unspoilt Atlantic coastline, fascinating history, vibrant culture and a country that very few travellers ever get to experience.

• This is a Rock My Adventure Exploratory Trip, meaning it will be our very first time running this itinerary. I’ve partnered with one of Angola’s most experienced local operators and, together, we’ve designed what I believe is an incredible route showcasing the very best of this fascinating country. As with all exploratory adventures, a little flexibility and an adventurous spirit go a long way. While every detail has been carefully planned, travelling in a destination that’s still developing as a tourism destination means there may occasionally be small changes or unexpected surprises along the way -and that’s all part of the adventure.

• Late September is one of the best times of year to visit Angola. The weather is warm and dry, road conditions are excellent, wildlife viewing in Iona National Park is at its best, and the clear desert skies create spectacular scenery by day and unforgettable stargazing by night. It’s also a wonderful time to relax on the beautiful beaches around Cabo Ledo before temperatures begin to rise later in the year.

• To keep the experience personal, this expedition is limited to just 10 travellers. With such a small group, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to get to know your fellow adventurers while exploring one of Africa’s least-visited and most rewarding destinations.

• Accommodation is on a twin-share basis throughout the trip. If you’d prefer your own room, single rooms are available on most nights for an additional supplement (subject to availability).

• Solo travellers are always welcome. In fact, most of our guests travel on their own. If you book a twin-share place, we’ll pair you with another same-sex traveller, and by the end of the trip you’ll almost certainly have made friends for life.
