Senegal is a country bursting with vibrant energy, rich traditions, warm hospitality, and a unique blend of West African cultures that will capture your heart from the moment you arrive.

Our adventure begins in the vibrant capital of Dakar, where we’ll explore some of the city’s most iconic landmarks, including the towering African Renaissance Monument and the historically significant Gorée and Ngor Islands. In the evenings, we’ll soak up the city’s infectious energy and local music scene.

Just outside the city, we’ll visit Lac Rose (Lake Retba), renowned for its striking pink waters and go on safari at the Bandia Wildlife Reserve, home to giraffes, zebras, rhinos, and more – a rare opportunity to see wildlife in Senegal.

Next, we venture into the enchanting Lompoul Desert, where a camel ride over golden dunes at sunset offers a serene and picturesque experience.

Continuing our journey, we’ll discover the colonial charm of Saint-Louis and the rich biodiversity of the Djoudj National Bird Sanctuary, a haven for birdwatchers.

Then it’s time to slow the pace as we travel deep into the lush Casamance region. Here, we’ll meet the King of Oussouye, explore traditional Diola villages, and unwind in the coastal haven of Cap Skirring.

In the musical village of Abene, famous for its reggae music and vibrant cultural scene, we’ll immerse ourselves in local life with a hands-on drumming lesson, a captivating Koumpo dance, and a live djembe performance.

We’ll also explore nearby Kafountine, famous for its vibrant fish market and traditional smokehouses, and stand in awe beneath the enormous, sacred cheese tree.

To round off our journey, we’ll cross into The Gambia and relax for two nights at a peaceful eco-lodge – the perfect ending to an unforgettable deep dive into the soul of Senegal.

The local payment is part of the overall cost of the trip. You pay the local payment to your tour leader in Euros (unless specified otherwise) upon arrival in Africa.

This includes the on-tour expenses that we cannot pay prior to arrival, such as national park entry fees, meals, local transport, and some activities.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Dakar & Welcome Dinner

Arrive in Dakar and transfer to your accommodation for the night.

Day 2: Exploring Dakar: City Tour & Ngor Island

Today we’ll explore the vibrant city of Dakar. We’ll visit the iconic Monument of the African Renaissance (the tallest statue in Africa), immerse ourselves in the local life at Soumbédioune Market, and wander through Independence Square.

We’ll also take a short boat ride to Ngor Island, a charming and colourful island just off the coast, where we’ll enjoy a leisurely lunch and spend the afternoon soaking in the laid-back island atmosphere.

This day is a perfect blend of history, culture, and natural beauty, offering a deep dive into the essence of Senegal.

In the evening, we’ll head out to a local restaurant for a delicious dinner. Afterward, those who want to can experience the vibrant atmosphere of Dakar’s incredible live music scene.

Known for its rich musical heritage, Dakar offers everything from traditional sabar drumming to Mbalax, a fusion of Afro-Cuban rhythms, as well as contemporary genres like hip-hop.

You can enjoy live performances at various venues across the city. It’s the perfect way to experience the energy and soul of Dakar after a day of sightseeing.

Day 3: Goree Island & Museum of Black Civilizations

Today, we take a ferry to Goree Island, a UNESCO World Heritage site that holds deep historical significance.

We’ll walk through the island’s poignant past, where the Slave House stands as a symbol of the transatlantic slave trade.

Afterwards, visit the Museum of Black Civilizations, an inspiring space dedicated to the African diaspora and the rich cultural history of the continent.

These two powerful experiences will give you a better understanding of Senegal’s role in history.

We’ll also explore some of Dakar’s vibrant art markets, where you can browse locally made crafts, paintings, and textiles, and connect with the city’s thriving creative community.

In the evening, we’ll return to the hotel, where you can unwind and relax after a full day of exploration.

Alternatively, if you’re in the mood for adventure, the night is yours to discover more of Dakar’s vibrant nightlife, from bustling bars to lively dance spots, offering a taste of the city’s dynamic energy.

Day 4: Bandia NP Safari & Pink Waters of Lac Rose

Our day begins with an exciting morning safari in Bandia Wildlife Reserve, a protected area that offers a chance to see West African wildlife up close.

As we drive through the savannah, keep an eye out for giraffes, white rhinos, elands, buffaloes, ostriches, and troops of monkeys among the baobab trees.

The reserve is also home to fascinating archaeological relics, including Serer burial mounds and ancient baobabs with hidden histories.

After our safari, we’ll continue on to Lac Rose, also known as Lake Retba, famous for its pink waters caused by the presence of Dunaliella salina algae and high salt content – especially vivid in the dry season.

Here, you’ll learn about the traditional salt harvesting methods used by local workers, often seen piling salt along the lake’s edge in vibrant mounds.

We’ll take some time to walk along the lakeshore and perhaps chat with salt collectors about their work and way of life.

In the afternoon, we’ll head to our accommodation for the evening, with time to relax and reflect on the day’s experiences.

Day 5: Saint-Louis: Historic Charm & Horse-Drawn Carriage Ride

We’ll depart early for a scenic drive north to the historic city of Saint-Louis.

Depending on time and scheduling, we may also stop at Kayar Fishing Village, one of the most vibrant artisanal fishing ports in West Africa. If included, this optional visit offers a fascinating glimpse into coastal life, with colourful pirogues, fishermen hauling in their catch, and a bustling local market.

In the late afternoon, we’ll explore Saint-Louis, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and former capital of French West Africa. Known for its colonial charm, colourful facades, and lively streets, the city is a delight to discover.

We’ll take a horse-drawn carriage ride through the old town, passing historical landmarks and soaking in the unique blend of French and Senegalese influences.

Afterwards, enjoy a stroll through the atmospheric streets before sitting down to dinner – either at the hotel or a lovely local restaurant in town.

Day 6: Birdwatching at Djoudj National Bird Sanctuary

We’ll begin the day early with a boat safari in the Djoudj National Bird Sanctuary, one of the most important bird reserves in the world.

This UNESCO-listed sanctuary is home to thousands of migratory birds, making it a haven for nature enthusiasts and wildlife photographers.

You’ll have the chance to spot a variety of species as we navigate the tranquil waters.

In the afternoon, around 5:30 PM, we’ll take a stroll to the local market, where you can experience the vibrant atmosphere and shop for unique crafts or fresh produce.

Afterward, we’ll head back to the hotel to relax for a bit.

In the evening, those who want to can go for a delicious dinner at a local restaurant, where you can sample authentic Senegalese cuisine and unwind after a day of adventure.

Day 7: Langue de Barbarie Boat Tour & Camel Ride in Lompoul Desert

This morning, embark on a boat tour through Langue de Barbarie, a pristine delta where the Senegal River meets the Atlantic Ocean.

It’s a serene setting for birdwatching and observing the daily life of local fishermen.

After our visit, we’ll drive directly towards the Lompoul Desert, stopping on the way to visit a traditional Fulani village, where you’ll get a glimpse of their unique culture and way of life.

Upon arrival at Lompoul, you’ll have the chance to experience the desert landscape with a memorable camel ride across the sand dunes.

Optional activities include quadbiking and sandboarding.

As the evening sets in, you’ll enjoy an authentic cultural performance with drumming and dancing.

It’s the perfect way to immerse yourself in the rhythm of the desert before sitting down for a delicious dinner under the stars.

Day 8: Touba Mosque & Journey to Kaolack

From Lompoul, we’ll journey to Touba, home to the largest mosque in West Africa.

During our visit, we’ll explore the impressive Great Mosque of Touba and the surrounding town, learning about its significance to the Mouride Brotherhood, one of Senegal’s most influential Islamic movements.

After soaking in the sights and culture of Touba, we’ll continue our journey south to Kaolack, a city known for its bustling markets and strategic location on the Saloum River.

It’s the perfect stopover before we venture deeper into the lush landscapes of southern Senegal.

Day 9: Journey to Ziguinchor: Casamance’s Tropical Beauty

Today is a drive day as we continue our adventure south, journeying from Kaolack through the ever-changing landscapes of the Sine-Saloum and into the lush, tropical region of Casamance.

As we travel, you’ll notice the scenery become greener and more vibrant – a striking contrast to Senegal’s drier north.

Arriving in Ziguinchor, the laid-back regional capital, we’ll settle into our hotel on the banks of the Casamance River.

With its colonial architecture, palm-lined streets, and friendly local atmosphere, Ziguinchor offers a peaceful introduction to the distinct cultural identity of this region, home to the Diola people.

Day 10: Cultural Immersion in Cap Skirring & Diola Villages

After breakfast, we head to Oussouye to meet the revered King of Oussouye – a spiritual leader and custodian of Diola traditions. This is a rare opportunity to witness a living cultural institution still respected by the local people.

We’ll then continue to a nearby Diola village called Miomp, where we’ll gain insights into traditional architecture, customs, and rural life.

By afternoon, we’ll arrive in Cap Skirring, Senegal’s most famous beach town. Nestled on the Atlantic coast, Cap Skirring is a tropical paradise of palm-fringed beaches, laid-back cafés, and golden sands.

It’s the perfect place to unwind after days of rich cultural exploration.

Day 11: History or Relaxation at Cap Skirring

Today is all about taking it easy and enjoying the coastal charm of Cap Skirring. Spend the day as you please – relax on the beach, enjoy a fresh seafood lunch, or browse the local boutiques and markets.

For those seeking a little more adventure, an optional boat trip is available, cruising through mangrove channels to visit the island villages of Eloubaline and historic Carabane.

Once an important colonial trading post, Carabane is now a peaceful, palm-covered island full of charm and crumbling history.

Whether you choose to explore or simply recharge with your feet in the sand, this free day offers something for everyone.

Day 12: Abene: Reggae, Djembe Drumming & Koumpo Dance

This morning we travel north along the coast to Abene, a small but culturally rich village known for its vibrant music scene (particularly reggae) and artistic soul.

Upon arrival, we’ll settle into our accommodation before we dive into the local rhythms with a drumming lesson led by talented musicians.

As the sun sets, we’ll witness a rare and thrilling Koumpo dance – a mystical Diola ritual featuring a masked spirit who spins and leaps in a hypnotic performance deeply rooted in ancestral tradition.

We’ll also be sure to find some excellent reggae reggae music on one or both nights!

Day 13: Fishing Village Exploration, Fromager Tree & More Music

Today begins with a short journey to the neighbouring town of Kafountine, famous for its bustling fish market and traditional smokehouses, where you can witness the age-old techniques used to preserve the day’s catch.

After a seafood lunch in town, we return to Abene to visit the legendary Fromager, or “cheese tree” – an enormous, sacred kapok tree that towers above the village and serves as a communal gathering spot.

In the evening, we’ll be treated to a live performance by a talented local djembe troupe, where the pulsating rhythms of Casamance come to life under the stars – a fitting finale to our time in one of Senegal’s most musically inspiring villages.

Day 14: Gunjar: Nature & Gambian Dance Workshop

Today, we bid farewell to Senegal (for now) and cross into The Gambia, West Africa’s smallest country.

After a scenic journey, we’ll arrive at our eco-lodge – a peaceful, award-winning retreat nestled in nature near the beach. Sustainably run and surrounded by forest and birdsong, it’s the ideal place to relax, reflect, and reconnect with nature while supporting responsible tourism.

After checking in, take a stroll to the nearby beach, enjoy a cool drink in the garden, or sway in a hammock as you soak up the tranquillity.

In the early evening, we’ll dive into Gambian culture with a fun and energetic traditional dance workshop before settling in for dinner.

Day 15: Leisure Day, Cultural Workshops & Farewell Dinner

Today is yours to enjoy at your own pace.

Relax on the nearby deserted beach, take a dip in the eco-friendly plunge pool, or indulge in a soothing massage or yoga session.

If you’re feeling active, explore the surrounding nature trails, join a guided walk with a local expert, or spot some of the incredible birdlife The Gambia is known for.

The lodge also offers hands-on workshops and cultural experiences – from cooking classes to traditional crafts such as silver making, wood carving, weaving, and even drumming lessons – a wonderful way to connect more deeply with the local culture.

However you choose to spend the day, this peaceful oasis invites you to slow down and fully appreciate the natural beauty and calm of The Gambia.

In the evening, we’ll gather for a farewell dinner to toast to an unforgettable adventure through Senegal and The Gambia.

Day 16: Departure Day

Today is always a sad day as we say goodbye to our new friends, but the memories and shared experiences of Senegal & The Gambia will last a lifetime!

We can arrange your transfer to Banjul International Airport or you can continue your Africa travels from there.
